5 Reasons Why Pinoys are so Crazy for Halo-Halo

$

Two words: Halo. Halo.

Halo-halo is probably the first thing to come to mind when it comes to the subject of proudly Filipino desserts. When directly translated to English, halo-halo means “mix-mix” as the dessert is literally a glass-full of different ingredients put together to create this buzz-worthy dessert. Even foreigners are crazy about this sweet treat. You can’t say you’ve been to the Philippines if you haven’t had halo-halo! It’s like a rite of passage. The perfect introduction to understanding the Filipino palate.

So why are Pinoys so crazy about halo-halo? What is it about this dessert that makes us tick? (And if you don’t love halo-halo, OMG WE CAN’T BE FRIENDS. Loljk.)

In honor of National Halo-Halo Sarap Day (yes that is a thing, I didn’t just make that up), we’ve come up with five reasons why we think Pinoys will always have a special place in their hearts for the ever comforting Pinoy dessert.

Mang Inasal Halo-Halo

5. It’s a heat-buster.

Living in the beach-abundant, tropical country that is the Philippines, man, it surely can get hot. Which is why Filipinos love airconditioned malls in the first place. We love to escape the heat. And what is another sure-fire way to beat the heat? With a cold dessert, of course! The halo-halo’s base is crushed ice, so I don’t know how it can get any cooler than this. So with summer season now upon us, expect halo-halo stands to pop up everywhere. It is the official summer dessert, after all.

Mang Inasal Halo-Halo

4. It is the perfect meal-ender and merienda.

I don’t know about you, but my favorite part of any meal is the dessert. And you know how the saying goes, “there is always room for dessert”? Well, there is always room in my stomach for halo-halo. And I think many Pinoys would surely say the same for them, too.

Cold and sweet and super delicious, halo-halo is just always the perfect way to cleanse the palate after a meal. And don’t forget meriendahalo-halo’s the perfect companion for your afternoon snack times over chikahan with your buddies, too.

Mang Inasal Halo-Halo

3. All those glorious ingredients!

The best thing about the halo-halo is that there is no one way of creating it. You can mix it however you like! With langka or no langka, with whatever beans, fruits, jello, ice cream, ube, leche flan…you can get as creative as you want. There are a ton of ways to mix it together, and it’s always a pleasant surprise how it always varies depending where you got your halo-halo or who made it for you. And you know what’s pleasantly surprising about it? No matter what ingredients are in your halo-halo, once you put that over ice and pour in a generous amount of milk, all the taste just. comes. together. perfectly. Most halo-halos are even topped with a scoop of ice cream and you can never go wrong with ice cream.

So basically halo-halo is everything good in this world, all in one bite.

Mang Inasal Halo-Halo

2. It’s the perfect cure for the soul.

How can something this good not heal you???? Whatever that is, girl, just grab a spoon and dig in to that halo-halo. Let the dessert’s beautiful sweetness give you the healing that you needed.

Chicken soup for the soul? Pass. I’ll take halo-halo any day to cure my aching heart, thank you.

Mang Inasal Halo-Halo

1. Halo-halo will always taste like home.

Why is it that when friends or family from abroad come home, they always have to have halo-halo sometime during their stay? As mentioned earlier, the halo-halo is a proudly Filipino dessert. Not only are the yummy ingredients commonly found in it are all familiar Filipino flavors we have grown up with and love; the memories tied to the desert are, for many, reminiscent to afternoon halo-halo sessions with family during your childhood.

Pinoys are sentimental creatures, so each time we dig in to a delicious cup of halo-halo, we are not just tasting good dessert. Each bite sends us off with sweet, nostalgic reminders of home, wherever in the world we are.

Mang Inasal Halo-Halo

Wishing you had halo-halo with you right now, yet? March 19 is National Halo-Halo Sarap Day, so if you found yourself relating in any way to the 5 reasons we wrote above, that is a sign you should come celebrate the festive day for the Philippine dessert with us.

Head on over to any Mang Inasal branch on March 19 for a special offering of their Pinoy Halo-Halo small for only P25! Regular size is also available at P45. Tell your favorite people about it; it’s time to catch up over our favorite dessert.

Do you love halo-halo too? Why? Tell us your stories in the comments!

3 Reasons Why Jollibee Will Always be Loved

Fulfilling bigger roles in this world as a fresh graduate is harder than I thought it would be. Work, school, love life (having and not having one both have ups and downs) and the feeling of losing track of where I am really heading seem to get most of my energy.

Good thing we Filipinos are happy people by nature. Growing up, we learned to count on simple joys, especially when life gets a little bit shaky. These joys, in their simplicity, give us real comfort, which is exactly what we need to get through the rainy days and see life’s challenges as bearable.

3 Reasons Why Jollibee Will Always be Loved

Correct me if I’m wrong, but Jollibee, our favorite fast-food chain, is indeed one of our happy pills—a place that celebrates with us and saves us from inevitable crappy days. Over the years, our love for this food place is one thing that we have been sharing as Filipinos. True Filipino pride!
jollibee_painting

This place never fails to bring joy to our lives – even since we were kids; it is a real constant. Its happy, homey ambiance, plus its food choices—from the all-time favorite juicy ChickenJoy to their Classic Spaghetti to their Yum Burgers—don’t speak too much, but can surely take away the blues and make life a little bit better.

Crispyliscious, juicyliscious ChickenJoy

Here are three reasons why Jollibee will always be a staple of our lives as Filipinos. I know there are many more reasons out there, but let us sum it up in three different points. (Childhood favorites die hard!)

3 Reasons Why Jollibee Will Always Be Loved   The classics.

3 Reasons Why Jollibee Will Always be Loved

3. Jollibee played a huge part in our childhood.

Going out when we were kids typically meant going to Jollibee.  This fast-food chain witnessed plenty of our unforgettable memories— from the first time we were given the chance to choose what Jollibee Kiddie meal we wanted to try to our love for collectible toys (I still keep a good number of them back home!) to our much-awaited Sunday slash family days.

3 Reasons Why Jollibee Will Always Be LovedFeels like family day every day.

Jollibee evokes so much nostalgia and I know, though you and I are complete strangers, we share similar childhood experiences.

2. It brings the family together.

Who doesn’t love Jollibee? When the youngest says he/she wants to go to Jollibee, the entire family will go to Jollibee. (Admit it or not, but it was always the first thing that would come to mind when asked about where we wanted to eat back when we were kids.)

Why Jollibee Will Always Be Loved

Nowadays, this place is a venue of birthday parties, random barkada meetups and family celebrations. With Jollibee’s innovative line of food choices, every celebration is sure to be as fun and delightful as can be. Without a doubt, Jollibee has indeed become a part of Filipino tradition.

3 Reasons Why Jollibee Will Always Be LovedPerfect for random barkada meet ups.

Jollibee Tuna Pie 2Many Jollibee lovers crave for this. Early this year, this Creamy Tuna Pie had its much-awaited comeback!

              Jollibee Salted Caramel Choco Sundae-3

Last March, Jollibee introduced its newest Sundae creation: the Salted Caramel Choco Sundae! Just in time for summer!

(Read about it here.)

Side note: I think one reason why this place brings the family together is because it feels like home. Jollibee serves as a home away from home, especially in the morning. Their freshly brewed coffee, beef tapa and egg are the best starters for a long day.

3 Reasons Why Jollibee Will Always Be Loved

For breakfast, they offer Beef Tapa, Longganisa, Hotdog and egg among others.

Jollibee’s Halo-halo Sundae and Adobo Flakes Yum Burger were made available last year for the celebration of Independence Day.

This homegrown fast-food restaurant has been successful in keeping its Filipino touch despite the growing competition brought by the rise of other food places that offer foreign cuisine.

1. It cheers us up! Effortlessly.

Entering the place and smelling ChickenJoy is kind of therapeutic, isn’t it?                           3 Reasons Why Jollibee Will Always Be LovedCertified Jollibee lover!

You experience the langhap sarap. You see other families giddily chatting about how one gets a high mark on a test. You become surrounded with happy colors like red and yellow plus the lively songs on the radio—how will stress linger? Indeed, “Sa Jollibee, bida ang saya!”

3 Reasons Why Jollibee Will Always Be Loved
3 Reasons Why Jollibee Will Always Be Loved                                jollibee-2Jollibee dressed up for Christmas last December.

It’s good to note that Jollibee’s mascot, was actually conceptualized to reflect our happy disposition as Filipinos. And yes, Jollibee is doing its job–not just in reflecting our positive vibe as Filipinos but also by being one of life’s simple joys that get us through the good and bad days.

3 Reasons Why Jollibee Will Always Be LovedAlways home.

And while there are many fancy food places out there (their number grows so fast), I know we will keep on finding reasons to go back to this place over and over again. It is every Filipino’s first love, after all.

Situated in the nearby province of Pampanga, Bale Dutung houses the gastronomic meals made by Chef Claude Tayag. On a calm and dewy Monday, Lifestyle TV held a press lunch in Bale Dutung for its upcoming new show “Chasing Flavors.” It is set to premiere on June 3rd, Saturday, at 9pm where Chef Tayag takes viewers to discover the colorful variety of local Filipino cuisine.

Different food writers and bloggers came to experience Filipino food with one of the Philippines’ leading culinary artist. Chef Claude is a self-taught culinary expert known to have uplifted Kapampangan cuisine through Bale Dutung. Take note that they only take reservations in Bale Dutung, with a minimum number of 12 guests, and that lunch can take up to four hours! Why so? You have to bask in the flavors of each dish, with matching stories told by Chef Claude himself!

Before we basked in the scrumptious lechon-inspired meals, Chef Claude gave a mini tour of his lovely abode. Apparently, he is a collector of items from the 50s era. Aside from his kitchen know-how, he is also an accomplished painter, sculptor, furniture designer, and a food and travel writer.

My curiosity of Bale Dutung was filled and answered with little knick-knacks and bits of new information. I found out that Bale Dutung means “Wooden House.” This explains the restaurant’s interiors and landscaping, which are centered on the concept of homeyness.

Upon entering the dining area, we were welcomed by wooden tables and chairs with colorful dining sets. The platings brought me back to those Sunday family lunches I grew up with.

chasing flavors_table

In Chasing Flavors, the well-known Kapampangan chef will probe the origins of Filipino’s iconic dishes from region to region, one dish at a time. He will also attempt to answer what makes each dish unique and outstanding in its own right.

Chasing Flavors_Chef Tayag Exhibit

Featured dishes in the coming episodes of Chasing Flavors include adobo, paksiw, sinigang, kilaw and sisig, pacit, lechon, cured meats, inihaw, salted dried fish, gata, gulay, panghimags, and rice.

For the different menus offered in Bale Dutung, the prices are as follows:

  • Lechon—P1,750 plus VAT
  • Anthony Bourdain—P1,850 plus VAT
  • Kapampangan—P1,850 plus VAT

But for this press lunch, we got a taste of mainly…guess? EVERYTHING LECHON!

The food that were served before us was beyond my expectations! The concept behind Bale Dutung is degustationthe food sampling is smaller as the experience focuses on the senses, culinary art, and of course, good company. So, are you ready for Lechon Six Ways?

SINGKAMAS with BAGOONG

Usually, as an appetizer, Filipinos are used to the green mango salads. But for starters, we were served sliced turnips in skewers, and a small dish with shrimp paste to add a bit of saltiness.

FRESH FRUIT SHAKE

While waiting for the program to start and the food to be served, we were given fresh Honey Dew Shake. It is truly a refreshing drink since it relies on the fruit’s own sweetness. Some guests even had second servings of this!

WATCH- Gordon Ramsay Chooses Filipino-Inspired Burger in a Burger Cook-Off!

Adobo is one of the most delicious Filipino dishes ever, and it looks like even celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay isn’t immune to its soy charms. In a burger cook-off hosted by ABC’s Good Morning America, Ramsay chose a Filipino-inspired burger featuring adobo‘s ingredients.

Watch the scrumptious video below:

Two contestants were asked to prepare their best burgers, which Ramsay will judge. One chef prepared a Bison and Chorizo Double Stacked Burger with special red sauce with brown sugar, paprika, and caramelized onion, while Maura Hohman created an adobo burger with bacon mixed in to the patty, and soy sauce, vinegar, pepper, and bay leaves.

Even Ramsay recognized that Hohman chose to use pan de sal instead of regular buns.

According to the celebrity chef, who is notoriously hard to please, “It’s seasoned beautifully. And the bun, that’s a traditional Filipino bread. It’s delicious.”

When asked to choose the winner, Ramsay said, “I’m going with the Filipino burger.”

He was on the show to promote his new cooking show The F Word, which will air on May 31.

WATCH: Filipino Food May Be The Next American Food Trend According To TV Host and Chef Andrew Zimmern

When foreigners talk about Filipino food, they are usually referring to the exotic and strange street food that we usually make them try to give them a “taste of the Philippines.” But it seems that Filipino food won’t just be balut or isaw to many foreigners. Filipino food may just be getting its own spotlight very soon.

In a video by Insider Tech, TV personality and chef Andrew Zimmern talks about how Filipino food may just be the next big American food trend because of its growing popularity.

Check it out below:

Andrew Zimmern, who is also the host of the American food show Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern, says that as America has been appropriating food from different parts of the world into their culture, Filipino food may be the next one to go big in the country.

(RELATED: Americans Have Massive Love for Filipino Food)

“It’s just going to keep getting more and more popular,” he says. “Simply because of the variety of ingredients and European techniques that are found in that food.”

He describes our food as “what happens when really good Asian food–island Asian food–brushes up against Spanish culture.”

It’s good to know that now we can also share our culture through good ol’ Filipino food, and it’s nice to know that people from all over the world appreciate it, too.

Don Rodolfo’s Cafe: Enjoy Food and Art in Bicol

As a typical millennial foodie who loves trying what’s new (guilt hits me hard at times), let me tell you about this coffee shop you shouldn’t miss the next time you visit Bicol.

Known to Bicolano millennials as Rodolfo’s, it is an artsy coffee shop located in Liboton, a few minutes’ drive away from downtown Naga. You won’t go wrong with this coffee shop owned by a blogger, photographer, and a certified food lover.

This place has become a go-to place for millennials, young adults, and even families.

A post shared by Jibreel 💕 (@tapwanders) on

Why Don Rodolfo’s Cafe? The food, of course.  Dubbed is the home of the Black Burger in Bicol, DRC that will tickle the adventurous side of your tastebuds.

This Black Burger only costs Php200.

DRC is the only cafe in Bicol that offers this bold and daring kind of burger.

They also have a Philly Cheese Steak Burger (Php159) bursting with the combined flavors of succulent meat, DRC’s special cheese sauce, and fresh veggies. How can you not be curious?

We’ve all heard about Mac and Cheese Burgers, but you have to try the Bicolano version of it. DRC crafted a fusion of luscious flavors of mac and cheese, juicy bacon, vegetables, and special spices all in one bun. This one only costs Php149.

There’s always something nostalgic about the rich taste of our all-time favorite ulam. And yes, making it the highlight of our pasta is never a wrong move. I tell you, you’ll love their Adobo Pasta (Php109).

For Oragons like me, #SiliIsLife. So if you’re also a sili person, this Sisig Pasta (Php149) is perfect for you.

Chicken waffle is a personal favorite (Php149). There’s something so good about how the waffle is mixed with the right amount of sweetness, when the juicy chicken fillet is sandwiched in it – the sugar, meat, and contrasting textures go in harmony.

I also have this ongoing love affair with DRC’s Smores Mug. This chocolate treat (for only Php99) may seem sinful at first glance, but just focus on how it effortlessly tempts you to indulge in a sugar rush every once and a while.

This one’s also perfect for capping off a productive week or for shooing away a bad day. Chocolate, after all, is always a good choice.

Bistro United’s Holiday Feast: Enjoy a Different Kind of Buffet Everyday

I love all-you can-eat buffets. Whenever I’m stressed or happy or sad, I feel that it can always be answered by a variety of dishes staring right at me. And while I frequent a ton of buffet restaurants all the time, sometimes I get bored since they serve the same thing over and over. Despite the variety, you have to admit it can get monotonous at times, especially for someone who goes to buffets at least once a week (ehem!).

I was thrilled when I was given a chance to try out Bistro United’s all-you-can eat-holiday feast, because guess what? They have themed dishes for each day of the week!

Chef Mia Capay wants diners to feel that Bistro United is a place where they can feel good while having comfort food. She wants it to be an unpretentious place where people can just hang out. True enough, you’ll feel that exact vibe once you enter the place with its warm lights and well-lit full windows.

Assistant Restaurant Manager Asiong Salonga mentions that one of the reasons why they decided to serve different cuisine every day of the week is so that they can showcase the depth and variety of their culinary prowess since they also have a catering business. Prospective clients can visit Bistro United and see for themselves the quality of food they can expect should they choose to book with Bistro.

The cuisine themes (for the price of Php375) are as follows: Tuesday – Pinoy Food Revival, Wednesday – Spanish Affair, Thursday – The Great Asian Invasion, Friday – Cheat Day, and lastly Saturday – Freestyle! We went on a Thursday, so we got to try The Great Asian Invasion. The spread ranged from Japanese to Chinese to Mongolian! I enjoyed every bit of the buffet, but here are my favorites:

Roast Beef

Oh boy, this was an amazing treat! These are thinly sliced US Prime Roast Beef Belly that have been marinated for 12 hours and then roasted from 6 – 8 hours on low heat. Can you imagine how tender that is? My mouth is watering at the mere thought of it. Add to that the rich pepper gravy and you’re on your way to perfection.

Yakimoni Teriyaki

Before trying this dish, I had minimal expectations since it looked fairly simple; but when I had my first bite, the fish was so tender, it felt like it was melting in my mouth. The sauce is also perfect and didn’t overpower the dish in any way. Topped with green onions and pickled onions, a mouthful is a piece of heaven.

Fried Siomai

I know, I know. You’re probably wondering what could be so special about siomai? Well, for one, the siomai wrap is super crispy; you can hear the crunch with every single bite. It also bursts with flavor once dipped into the special sauce.

My Top 5 Recommended Must-Try Rice Meals

$
0
0

When I try new dishes around Metro Manila, I usually post a picture of them on my Instagram profile (that is, if they’re #InstaWorthy). I rarely post about dishes that I dislike (what’s the point in doing so? 😃).

I recently wrote about My Top 5 Burgers, and I thought it’d be cool to do another Top 5 but this time on RICE MEALS! Why top 5? Well, I only go with top 5 because it’s easy to remember and less to choose from when I need to decide on what to eat.

I love rice – yes, I DO! All my friends can tell you that. I can’t eat as much as I used to, but I love my rice. (There was a time when I could eat 9 cups of rice at Mang Inasal – that hasn’t happened again since, though.) Another reason is because this is the Philippines and When in Manila, you’ve gotta eat RICE!

How did I choose these 5 rice meals? To be honest, these are the 5 dishes that really ‘hit the spot’. I didn’t include my regular, default rice dishes like the Bacon Breakfast at Army Navy or the Sirloin Beef Tapa at Cafe Mary Grace simply because those will always be #InstaWorthy and will always #HitTheSpot!

PS: These are not ranked in any particular order. Also, none of the items mentioned in this article were ‘paid’ to be here.

My Top 5 Recommended Must-Try Rice Meals

Braised Pork Belly at Wildflour Cafe + Bakery, Makati – Php 450

Braised-Pork-Belly-Wildflour

Where do I begin? When I eat at Wildflour, I usually order my usual Wildflour Breakfast because I love the sausage, but I wanted to try something new one time, and the Braised Pork Belly caught my eye. It may be a bit pricey, but the flavors will have you dancing all day! Oh, and I believe they use Brown Rice for this – even healthier! What makes this Braised Pork Belly different? The adobo rice!

Angus Beef Tapa (Grain Bowl) at Dean & DeLuca, Makati – Php490

Angus-Beef-Tapa-Dean-DeLuca

Looking for healthy? This is it! It is not your typical Beef Tapa. I usually go for Mary Grace’s Beef Tapa (my all-time favorite), but I think this Grain Bowl tops that. It’s not just flavorful tapa, it’s amazing because of all that’s in it. (Don’t ask me what’s in it – I have no clue. I just eat.) All I can say is that it all goes well together and tastes VERY GOOD. Pricey? A bit… but definitely worth it, believe me.

Coq Au Vin at Bastille Bistro, Sucat, Paranaque – Php265

Coq-Au-Vin-Bastille-Bistro1

After a long day’s work, I ended up eating here. I’ve eaten here before (both times, I had the Pulled Pork Adobo). I was going to get the adobo again, but went through the menu to see if they had any roast chicken. I saw the Coq Au Vin and it turned out to be pretty good! It didn’t last long, that’s for sure.

Beef Shawarma Rice at Sultan Grill, Makati – Php225

Beef-Shawarma-Rice-Sultan-Grill

Who doesn’t love shawarma rice? Sultan is in Makati, though; so if you plan on going on a weekday, be sure to get there by 11:30am to get a table. It’s usually full and has a line by 12. All of their food is good, but I like going for the Beef Shawarma Rice because it’s really good and is just perfect.

USDA Corned Beef at La Creperie, Tagaytay – Php295

Beef-Shawarma-Rice-Sultan-Grill

We tried La Creperie after biking and I’d go back anytime! The Corned Beef has a bit of spiciness to it – which makes it even better. The serving size is pretty okay for the price, but I had to order an extra cup of rice to finish the Corned Beef 😃 . Try their crepes, too, because you cannot not have one.

Every time I think about the moments I had with each one of these meals, I just want to get in the car and go do it again! Do you get that feeling sometimes?

If you ever check out my Instagram Profile – @wesleetrout, you’ll see that I love #Food. So, if you have something you think I’ll like, shoot me a message on Instagram sometime!

Cheers and happy eating!

10 Restaurants in Manila That Serve Awesome Filipino Food

$

When someone asks you where you can find the best Filipino food in town, there’s only one answer: “My house”. But especially in the bustling and traffic-ridden streets of the city, it’s undoubtedly more convenient at times to dine out than at home. These are just some of the best restaurants in Manila that serve some straight-up great Filipino food, almost rivaling mom’s cooking or giving their own twist. Which one are you trying next?

Manam

Virtually every Filipino restaurant strives to offer Filipino food with a twist, but nobody does it like Manam. The restaurant offers Filipino classics and beloved dishes given a twist, side by side. Manam gives customers different choices on portions and puts their own spin on plating.

Must-try: House Crispy Sisig, Sinigang na Beef Short Rib & Watermelon

Tipsy Pig

Looking for a chill night out? Of all the gastropubs that have hit the metro as of late, no other establishment embodies the word quite like Tipsy Pig. The popular nighttime joint has a seriously great-tasting menu, offering the best of Filipino comfort food with Western influences by Chef Rainier Barbers. Their food may be bar chow-friendly, but they’re certainly not secondary to the drinks. In fact, most of our visits to Tipsy Pig have been strictly for the food — drinks to follow.

Must try: Belly Good Sisig Tacos, Tokwa’t Belly 3 Way

Locavore

oyster and lechon sisig locavore

This Kapitolyo import, which once incurred heavy waiting lines at its first location in Pasig, has been making waves even with its expansion to Bonifacio Global City, and with good reason. Chef Mikel Zaguirre has offered creative takes on Filipino food mixed with French techniques. “Locavore” refers to a diner who eats food that has been grown or produced locally, which the restaurant champions. You’ll find local farm-to-table ingredients as well as local brews on the menu.

Must-try: Sizzling Sinigang, Lechon & Oyster Sisig

Aristocrat

For balikbayans, no trip is ever complete without a visit to the famed Aristocrat — plus points if it’s at its original location on Roxas Boulevard. Aristocrat has been around since the 1940s and is undoubtedly an iconic force in the Philippine culinary scene, best known for its Chicken Barbecue which is unparalleled to this day. As they say, no matter the size of your budget, you can dine like an Aristocrat.

Must-try: the classic Chicken Barbecue with Java Rice and Java Sauce, Pork Ribs Barbecue

Bistro Remedios

Throughout the years, the LJC Group has consistently been at the helm of some of the country’s most well-known Filipino restaurants, and Bistro Remedios is no exception. Standing in its original location along the Remedios Circle in Malate, Bistro Remedios (formerly known as Ang Bistro sa Remedios) serves humble Kapampangan cuisine in a chic bistro setting that is undoubtedly Filipino. If you have any foreign guests over, Bistro Remedios serves as the perfect introduction to Filipino cuisine, without much of the gimmicks that you normally see in traditional restaurants.

Must-try: Pork Humba

Mesa

What happens when you put an entrepreneur and a politician together? They create one of the most memorable Filipino restaurants, that’s what. Mesa Filipino Moderne is the brainchild of restaurateur Enrico Dee and Senator Kiko Pangilinan, serving elevated versions of Filipino fare.

Must-try: Boneless Crispy Pata, Pinatayong Manok

Crisostomo

When you’re dining at any of Chef Florabel Co-Yatco’s restaurants, you know you’re in for quite an experience. Crisostomo, described as “turn-of-the-century Filipino dining”, serves Filipino food with a sophisticated twist, with the menu items named after different characters from Jose Rizal’s novels.

Must-try: Paella Filipino

Pamana

Owned by Happy Ongpauco-Tiu, Pamana is a heritage restaurant serving heirloom recipes, passed down from generation to generation. Descended from the clan behind Barrio Fiesta, one can only expect great things from Pamana. You no longer have to make the trip to Tagaytay to get a taste of their food, as Bistro Pamana has also opened in Legaspi Village in Makati.

Must-try: Kare-Kare Boneless Pata and Crispy Tadyang, Nilasing na Mangga

Cafe Juanita

Kapitolyo residents know that Cafe Juanita is something of a gem in the neighborhood. Even if they’ve opened along Burgos Circle in BGC, their Kapitolyo location is still worth a visit with its quirky, kitschy interiors that give off a homey, eclectic East Asian vibe. The food is undoubtedly Pinoy, though, featured internationally on Time Magazine and on Anthony Bourdain’s website.

Must-try: Beef Caldereta

Wooden Spoon

It’s no doubt that the late Nora Daza remains to be a local culinary icon, the Philippines’ Julia Child of sorts. Her legacy lives on with her son Sandy Daza, also a celebrated chef in his own right, with the restaurant Wooden Spoon, which serves some of Nora’s most beloved dishes.

Must-try: Adobo Flakes

Sentro 1771

A post shared by Sentro 1771 (@sentro1771) on

Consistently rated as one of the top Filipino restaurants in Manila, Sentro 1771 was included in the Miele Guide in 2008. Come in not just for the food, but for its cozy yet sophisticated interiors, perfect for catching up with old friends.

Must-try: Sinigang na Corned Beef, Rated GG

Bonus:

Balay Dako

If you don’t mind making the drive to Tagaytay, Balay Dako should be worth the visit, the latest restaurant by Chef Tony Boy Escalante of Antonio’s fame. Whereas Antonio’s provided an intimate fine dining experience with European flavors, Balay Dako (Negrense for “big house”) is warm and homey, serving family-style Filipino dishes at more affordable prices.

Must-try: Pinakbet na Kanin at Lechon Kawali, Chicken Inasal

Bale Dutung

While Balay Dako is south of Manila, you’d have to drive north of Manila to get to Bale Dutung, located in the culinary haven of Pampanga. At Bale Dutung, you’re not just a customer; you’re a guest as you’re treated to Chef Claude Tayag’s talents in his own home. Bale Dutung made it as one of the top restuarants in the 2009 Miele Guide, and was even featured by Anthony Bourdain himself. Remember to make a reservation ahead.

Must-try: Kare-Kare Lamang Dagat

This Converted Ancestral House Serves Great Filipino Heritage Cuisine

Nothing may pique your fancy more than experiencing our Filipino culture from the olden days. If you are somewhat of a ‘picker’ and love to bask in the presence of antiques, then going to this ancestral home will be a treat for you and well worth the travel.

If you are particularly in search of great Filipino heritage cuisine, then put this restaurant on your bucket list because your discerning tastebuds will not be disappointed by it.

In the heart of the capital of Laguna, Sta Cruz lies a charming ancestral home that has been converted into a restaurant: Aurora Filipino Cuisine. Owned by the Salongas since the Japanese war and nearing almost a hundred years old, this place has a lot to offer your senses.

It is from Aurora, the grandmother of Chef Day Salonga (owner of Ted’s Laguna, Tapeo in Fort, and cofounder of MonDay Chefs, a restaurant consultancy firm), whose passion for cooking produced a family of culinary artists who came forth to bring the heritage food of Laguna onto everyone’s plates .

From the moment you step in, you’ll be able to soak in the ambiance of this old ancestral home.

It will be impossible for you to just sit down and not look around because every nook has a story to tell, which the staff will happily tell you about. Ask about the old cash register up front, for instance, and the photo of the place when it was a parlor back in the day.

Check out the perming machines way back then! They can be found on the second floor.

The second floor also houses function rooms where intimate dinners/lunches can be served.

It is in the details that you know that a lot of love and passion have been put in preserving the place, so that people may enjoy meals the way they are meant to be enjoyed.

For someone who loves food (who doesn’t?), there are days when I crave a particular cuisine rather than a specific dish. Recently, my tongue seems to be screaming at me to go find Filipino dishes…and this delivery service definitely satiated my craving.

Have you found your holy grail when it comes to Filipino food yet? If not then it might be time to try Ha-Inan, a restaurant that delivers hearty Filipino dishes right at your doorstep.

ALSO READ: Luljetta’s Hanging Gardens and Spa in Antipolo: An Ideal Getaway Destination Even During the Rainy Season

Located in Barangka, Mandaluyong, Ha-Inan’s delivery food service stays true to its name and concept—bringing food to every Filipino family’s table. Initially, Bernadette, the owner of Ha-Inan, said that they were supposed to name their little restaurant “Queen Bee”, after their mom, before it eventually developed to its current name.

When asked why they chose to go with Filipino food rather than other types of cuisine, they said that they saw its potential. They came up with the concept of the restaurant and two months later, on October 10, 2017, Ha-Inan was launched.

Looking at Ha-Inan’s menu, you’ll see that they have more than enough options to choose from and all of it are quite affordable! However, if you’re still unsure of what to choose, we recommend these dishes that will surely lead to a happy tummy.

Okoy

For a light snack, Ha-Inan’s okoy will satiate your craving for something crunchy. A single piece costs only Php 9, and a minimum order of 5 pieces will only cost Php 45 (this will be good for sharing but we wouldn’t be surprised if you claim it all for yourself!). Looking for more reasons to try their okoy? They serve it with their special mix of vinegar, which is probably the star of the show if not for the okoy itself.

MaSisig

If your new year’s resolution is to consume less pork then maybe you should set that goal aside for awhile to try this. Customers looking for a heavier meal can go for their sisig, which of course goes well with their steamed rice (Php 15). For Php 170, their sisig can make two to three tummies happy.

Empanaditas

Another option for a quick fix is their Empanaditas. Its small size definitely doesn’t hamper with its taste. Each empanadita features a soft dough. The inside isn’t compromised either as each empanadita is jampacked with your chosen filling (flavors are beef taco, pizza pie and creamy chicken). A box of six costs just Php 60 while a box of 12 costs Php 120.

Pancit

Ha-Inan presents you with “Ang pancit na binabalik-balikan.” Truly, their pancit is one of a kind. The reason? They are paired with a special chili sauce that was sourced from Davao. Prices range from Php 70 (for individuals looking to satiate their pancit cravings) to Php 990 (for big parties). It can go as high as Php 1050 for their Spaghetti with Meatballs and Pancit Malabon Negra.

Sinigang Steak

I kid you not, every bite of this dish will send your tastebuds to heaven. Their steak is quite tender that you won’t even need to slice it as much and the sinigang itself is a mix between sour and savory. You can try their Sinigang Steak for Php 480 which is good for three to five persons. However, for bigger groups, you can enjoy this dish for Php 850.

For those looking to try a variety of dishes with just one order, they also have combi meals available which ranges from Php 115 to Php 139.

Looking forward to try these mouthwatering dishes? You can reach them at 09215437456, 245-5856 or 636-1686. For those who reside in Mandaluyong, they are just one jeepney away with their location in Barangka.

Article by Isaiah Emmanuel Suguitan / Photos by Isaiah Emmanuel Suguitan and Joselle Marie Fajardo / Graphics by Joselle Marie Fajardo

Diet – the word that has lost its place in a lot of people’s vocabulary. It is something that everyone aspires to follow yet only some are able to pursue. Due to certain limitations, such as a lack of time to prepare healthier meals, people nowadays tend to feast on fast food and convenience store items instead. This scenario is prevalent with people of all ages, whether they’re students or employees.

(READ: Here’s How Subscribing To A Healthy Meal Plan Changed Me In 3 Months)

However, did you know that you can still pursue that dream to eat healthier food and get fit (along with some exercise and enough rest) even if you’re always on the go? Yes. You read it right! You still can!

Gourmade by Chef Rob Lau, one of Manila’s famous healthy food delivery services, serves Ketogenic diet week-long meals that can help you reach your fitness goals! Did I mention that their week-long meal plan includes BACON?

A sample Ketogenic menu by Gourmade

For those of you who don’t know what a Ketogenic diet is, it’s basically composed of low carb and high-fat food items. Throughout the duration of the diet, the body produces ketones (the byproducts of fatty acids), which are used as energy. This idea came from the fact that our body stores the fats that we consume. To reinforce this, a person following a ketogenic diet goes through ketosis (where the body uses ketones as energy). To sum everything up, the keto diet is designed to increase your metabolism.

To give you a glimpse of why this is a MUST-TRY, we tried Gourmade’s week-long Keto meal plan and here are some reasons why you should give it a shot:

3 Reasons Why You Should Try Gourmade’s Ketogenic Meal Plans

3. The meals are very filling!

Menu for Day 1 (L to R): Bangus Sisig Lettuce Wrap, Five Spice Porkchop with Pechay, Cheese and Bacon Omelette

Whenever I eat a meal, I always make sure that I include rice or bread. But with Gourmade’s meals, I felt full even without the carbs! Another great thing is that the meal I only has 1500-1700 calories in it. This way, I was able to manage my calorie intake and maximize weight loss.

My personal favorite dish that day: the Five Spice Porkchop with Pechay!

2. The taste is extraordinary!

Menu for Day 3 (Clockwise): Hainanese Chicken with Ginger, Grilled Liempo with Ginisang Kangkong, Keto Bacon Deviled Eggs

Since the meals are prepared by a renowned chef, you can definitely expect them to be out of the ordinary! The weekly meal plans are carefully planned, selected, and innovated to cater to different food preferences. This ensures that the food is unique and different all the time. Think of it as a tasty surprise that awaits your tastebuds every meal time!

Our week-long menu!

1. You can get the food delivered whenever you want!

Menu for Day 4 (L to R): Cheesy Chicken Fritters, Burger Patty Stuffed with Cheese and Pomodoro Sauce and Greek Salad

Another great thing about Gourmade is that I was able to get my food delivered before going to school. I had my meals delivered at around 4am and boy, are they prompt! Not only are you assured of the food being fresh, but they are also able to bring it to your doorsteps at the time that you want it.

Burger Patty Stuffed with Cheese and Pomodoro Sauce

Since its public introduction in late 2016, Gourmade has stormed the Metro by serving more than 200 weekly subscribers across all diet meal programs, which include Skinny Down, Pescatarian and Ketogenic. These subscribers even include some local celebrities, like Kris Bernal, Awra, Alice Dixson and Aiko Melendez!

So if you’re looking for a healthy way to kick off your fitness dreams this 2018, Gourmade by Chef Rob Lau is the one to call!

LOOK: This is What Jollibee’s Palabok is Called in the US (Plus Other Differences!)

$

0

It is true! Filipino food is the fastest-growing foreign cuisine trend in America. In fact, there are already 35 Jollibees in the States. I got to visit a branch in Woodside, New York.

The names of the food are the biggest differences.

The names of the dishes will make you chuckle. While the terms “Chickenjoy” and “Jolly Spaghetti” sound perfectly delicious in English, Americans (not Fil-Ams) have no idea how to say “palabok”. So in the US, “palabok” is interestingly called “Fiesta Noodles”.

I understand that this is just an attempt to make the traditional dish sound more appealing to unassuming American ears. The problem I think, though, is that the name “fiesta noodles” does not describe the flavor…so why not just call it “palabok”? The Tagalog name is quite catchy, after all!

The most important factor? The Fiesta Noodles taste delicious and surpassed my expectation of fast food quality. The Chickenjoy is an amazing complement to the creamy, shrimp-garlic flavor of the pancit palabok.

Breakfast is a different story: the plain and uninviting terms Beef Tenders, Corned Beef, Sweet Pork and Pork Sausage have replaced our sacred SILOGs. They are still accompanied by an egg, a slice of tomato, and a generous scoop of garlic rice as tradition; but what is a proper silog without the -silog in the title?

The breakfast menu also feels incomplete due to the lack of real longganisa. How can such a recognizable Pinoy flavor and breakfast specialty be left off the menu? There is no excuse because the sweet/spicy sausage is widely available in the States at any Film-Am grocery or Asian market. Americans already love sausage from all over the world, so it would be one of the easiest Filipino foods to introduce. Jollibee US should consider adding longganisa to the menu ASAP!

Fries or rice?

No need to panic! White steamed rice is readily available in convenient scoops at Jollibee USA. Fries seem to be a very popular option there, too; but there really is NOTHING Filipino about the fries at Jollibee USA. Maybe they should try a dusting of adobo seasoning, or a salted egg yolk batter for the crispy fries?

The good news is that if you order a burger steak with mushrooms, you can choose between a scoop of fresh rice or fries to mix into the gravy. Both options are good.

Unli soft drinks. Sugar all you can.

As an American, I am used to seeing free refills for soft drinks in every fast food resto. But as a Filipino, I also see an opportunity to drink as much as I can…then fill up my cup on the way out – walang yelo-yelo!

But we all know that this much sugar is just plain bad for your health. Jollibee USA offers unlimited free refills on all soft drinks because it is expected in the States. I don’t think this would work at a Metro Manila location.

The authenticity is there.

You see, politeness and courtesy are somewhat rare to receive in US fast food restaurants – at least to the level that a Filipino would expect. When you DO receive politeness and courtesy in fast food, it makes a huge difference to an American.

There are also those authentic experiences that cannot be faked: from a pleasantly smiling young man or woman with a perfect neutral Filipino-English accent accepting your order, to the elderly workers who could easily be imagined as anyone’s lolo or lola, pridefully cleaning trays and greeting each person with a “salamat po” as they make their way towards the exit. It can be a heartwarming experience for a Pinoy that does not have the pleasure of hearing Tagalog everyday.

Food is a funny thing; we grow so attached to our organization of flavors and textures that even a small change in a familiar recipe can set off alarms in our taste buds. Jollibee USA looks, feels, and tastes almost exactly like any Jollibee in the Philippines. Any Filipino in the world would feel right at home in this location.

Cheers to Filipino food growing in popularity across the US!

Have you been to a Jollibee abroad aside from the US? What are the differences you noticed?

Love the Feel of Home-Cooked Meals? Sarsa Serves Them With A Delicious Twist!

Article and photos by Denise Nicole Uy

The food scene in the Metro has so many choices grabbing our attention, it can be a bit overwhelming. Sometimes, all we want are food that we can eat again and again and never get sick of it. Sarsa offers exactly that!

Filipino food is always delicious, but it takes something special to convince us to turn away from our Lola’s sinigang. Even your Lola would adore Sarsa’s approach to food, taking inspiration and elevating the entire experience of eating to a whole other level.

With a contemporary approach to food, Chef JP Anglo isn’t afraid to mix things up in the pursuit of flavor. Just look at what he did to the batchoy! As a lover of ramen, I couldn’t help but be intrigued by his batchoy ramen noodle soups! There’s just something about eating a big bowl of noodle soup that feels like getting a big warm hug.

Regular batchoy – Php210 / Special batchoys – Php285

With prices like these and bowls as huge as they are, it’ll be hard to resist ordering all three in one go. (You totally should.)

The seafood-gata batchoy is definitely a winner, while the spicy batchoy is a must for fans of spicy food! Everybody loves batchoy, but who knew it could ever taste like this? I would never think of gata-infused batchoy! The batchoy-ramen is something you eat when you just want to take a pause and savor your meal. And with bowls that look as pretty as these, your eyes will thank you, too!

But Sarsa isn’t just about delicious bowls of noodle-y goodness; they also have the best cripsy isaw I’ve ever tried!

Isaw – Php185

A streetfood staple, I’ve grown used to the soft chewy isaw of my younger years. Here, they are grilled to crispy perfection. The texture is such an interesting change and the flavor just pops!

Atay with tsokolate – Php185

The atay with tsokolate is something you can’t leave without trying! For such a weird combination, it is certainly hearty and it pairs well with rice. This is a dish you can brag to your friends for trying. How can you not? The chocolate sauce is divine!

What is perhaps the most quintessential Filipino dessert is served simply but the flavor is just stunning.

Halo-halo – Php145

I’m not a fan of beans in my halo-halo, I like it simple and impactful. Sarsa’s Halo-Halo is just that, with the ice so light and fluffy you’d think you were eating snow!

Sarsa isn’t your typical restaurant. This place serves you food that take you back to your childhood but revamping it with fabulous additions and mixtures that are sure to make you look at Filipino cuisine in a different light!

5 Exciting Dishes at Tipsy Pig that Elevate Filipino Classics

Written by: Danelle Go / Photography by: Arielle Choy

There are so many things to love about Tipsy Pig from its casual ambience and its cool environment to the fact that they’re both a great restaurant and a lively bar. That doesn’t even take their amazing food into account yet. So, whether you’re from the North or from the South, you should make some time in your schedule to enjoy some great food and great company at the place.

Among the large variety of items on Tipsy Pig, you will notice that some of their bestsellers (and my personal favorites) are actually modern takes on some Pinoy classics. For all of the local food lovers out there, here are some dishes to try:

5 Exciting Dishes at Tipsy Big that Elevate Filipino Classics

5. Tipsy Kare-Kare

I’m not the biggest fan of kare-kare, but this is an exception! From the first bite alone, it;s jam-packed with flavor. The sauce is thick and nutty, just the way classic kare-kare should be served. The vegetables, and of course the pork, are cooked to perfection, with the pork staying nice and crispy because of the way the dish is presented. Needless to say, this Filipino staple has been brought to a whole new level at Tipsy Pig!

4. Tipsy Pochero

Pochero is probably one of the best and most delicious comfort foods out there. It’s soupy, it’s tasty, and it has a bit of everything—what’s not to love? With Tipsy Pig’s twist on pochero, all the important aspects remain, but are presented in a new and unique fashion. It still has nice tender beef, perfectly crisp veggies, and a really great tomato base soup that will bring you back to your childhood, but this time it comes to you in a perfectly Instagram-worthy way.

3. RCD (Roasted Chicken Bacolod)

For all of the chicken inasal lovers out there, this one’s for you! Tipsy Pig has their own take on the beloved recipe involving a whole chicken and a lot of rice! Tipsy Pig serves a whole chicken, perfectly marinated and turned orange, just the way a good inasal dish should be. To take things up a notch, the chicken is stuffed with rice and coated in the same delicious marinade, so there’s no need for side orders of any sort. Just take note that it can serve around 2-3 people (the same goes for the Tipsy Pochero).

2. Tipsy Ice Breaker

With the insane heat in Manila, there’s no doubt you’re going to want something to cool you down. This is where the Tipsy Ice Breaker, Tipsy Pig’s halo halo, comes in! It has all of the necessary ingredients of a good, classic halo halo: ube ice cream, leche flan, pinipig, jelly, and shaved ice, among the other content of this fan favorite. Don’t miss out on this tasty and refreshing dessert!

1. Sisig Platter

It’s hard not to love sisig; it’s crispy, crunchy, salty… Whether it’s sizzling or just served with some good white rice, it’s so easy to eat! Tipsy Pig, being the geniuses that they are, created a new way of eating this classic by turning them into… SISIG TACOS!! Yes, sisig tacos! Perfectly cooked sisig placed on soft warm tortillas, topped with crunchy piece sof pork skin, and served with soy sauce and calamansi. Just imagining the dish while writing this is making me hungry! This dish perfectly sums up Tipsy Pig in the sense that you can eat it as an appetizer, or even as bar chow. Morning or night, any time is the perfect time to enjoy this bestseller!

And on that note, morning or night is the perfect time to visit Tipsy Pig! Time to get your friends together!

Maria Maria Restorante: Where Old Meets New

$

0

If you are tired of your same old go-to restaurant at Greenhills, it’s time to check out a hidden gem at Xavier Residences. Maria Maria Restorante has a classic charm that lures family and friends into taking a break from the busy-ness of the world for an afternoon of home-cooked comfort meals.

MariaMaria

Maria Maria is the legacy of the Ejercito clan’s Dona Maria Ejercito. With three generations of fine food, you know you can never go wrong. Stepping inside, you will be greeted by their cozy yet classic interiors that will take you back in time. Large framed photos of the two Marias hang on their wall to show how food connects the two generations.

MariaMaria

What is amazing about this restaurant is that Head Chef Enet Santiago incorporated family recipes to all of the dishes served. Their dishes are a fusion of different flavors around the world. They have Italian food, American food, and of course, Filipino food with a twist. Here are some of the newest dishes that Maria Maria has to offer:

MariaMaria

Adobo Rillet (Php117)

The Adobo Rillet surprised us because it looks more like a dip than actual adobo. It has a texture that will make you feel like you are eating some of your Lola’s homemade spread.

MariaMaria

Tinapa & Vegetable Lumpia (Php183)

Most Filipinos love tinapa, this dish is made extra special with their special sweetened organic vinegar that perfectly complements the lumpia, making it a go-to comfort food for their diners.

MariaMaria

Chicken Binakol (Php150)

The Chicken Binakol is your not typical tinola because instead of using the usual chicken broth, they use coconut juice and some niyog to make the soup flavorful and unique.

MariaMaria

Pollo Catalana (Php447)

A personal favorite of mine is the Pollo Catalana. Maybe I just really love chicken dishes, but I also love the playful taste of its sauce in my mouth. Since it is healthy, too, I feel less guilty devouring myself a plate of this.

MariaMaria

Ribs ni Love (Php1441)

The team’s favorite, however, was the Ribs ni Love. According to Chef Emet, this is their specialty. It is inspired by Mayor Erap’s love for grilled meat. You don’t need any barbecue sauce for this dish, either, because their organic vinegar with garlic is enough to make the flavors stand out.

Of course, there is always room for dessert and we got to try the best desserts on their menu:

MariaMaria

Molten Lava Cake (Php210)

The first dessert served and our absolute favorite was the Molten Lava Cake. I cannot even describe the feeling of eating this heavenly dessert. It has such a soft texture to it that the cake and chocolate melt in your mouth with every bite.

I would definitely go back to Maria Maria just to have more of this perfectly made Molten Lave Cake.

MariaMaria

Sunflower Seed Cheesecake (Php210)

Another personal favorite of mine is the Sunflower Seed Cheesecake topped with oozing caramel sauce and delicate Sunflower seeds. The cheesecake is not the regular heavily textured cheesecake that you get to try in coffee shops. I love how the flavors are balanced and not too sweet.

MariaMaria

Pistachio Raspberry Cassata (Php195)

If you are a gelato lover, you will love the flavorful scoop of this ice cream.

MariaMaria

Affogato ni Maria (Php120)

The Affogato ni Maria is basically vanilla ice cream on an espresso shot. This dessert woke us up due to the strong taste of the espresso. The vanilla ice cream balanced out the flavor, though.

Maria Maria Restorante is the perfect place for a family celebration. The Ejercito Family really made sure that every person who eats at Maria Maria will get a dose of Dona Maria’s kitchen. If you can’t visit the restaurant itself to experience the legacy of the Marias firsthand, though, you can also get their dishes delivered right at your doorstep through Honestbee.

They also have an on-going back to school promo this June where you can get a free Mac & Cheese or Hawaiian Pizza when you buy 2 burgers.

WHEN IN MANILA, you can expect good food to be all around the metropolis. Whether it’s traditional Filipino restaurants, fusion, or theme-inspired cafes and restos, WE HAVE IT ALL!

SM Mall of Asia is one of the biggest malls in the Philippines and it’s the haven of everything that one’s wildest imagination could ever think of. And that includes food! If ever you’re thinking of going on a food crawl, the mall is a good bet because it’s home to quaint yet relaxing coffee shops, all-out buffets, and unique food concepts.

Here are some of the amazing restaurants featuring distinct dining concepts you’ll find at one of the world’s largest malls!

7. Fatburger (Level 1, Main Mall)

FB Page: https://www.facebook.com/FatburgerPhilippines/?ref=br_rs

Known for their fresh-never-frozen and cooked-to-order lean-beef, chicken, turkey, lamb, and veggie burgers and sandwiches, Fatburger is among the leading burger chains in the US. The Los Angeles-based chain features some of the most irresistible food items one could ever imagine since they started operations in 1947.

Calling all the certified foodies! Here are their delicious food items:

Sweet Potato Fries (P105)

Looking for a twist with your typical fries? Fatburger’s Sweet Potato Fries will leave you and your tummy wanting for more!

Onion Rings (P95)

Are you big on Onion Rings? If you are, then these ones won’t disappoint you! I highly recommend you pair these with their equally scrumptious burgers.

Buffalo Chicken Wings (between P175 – P695)

Love Chicken Wings? Have no fear! Fatburger’s signature rendition of the classic Buffalo Chicken Wings will keep you going back for more.

Cookies & Cream and Chocolate Milkshake (P235)

Looking for an outlet for your sweet tooth? Their milkshakes are there to save the day! They are best enjoyed with their fresh burgers and sides.

6. Jin Joo Korean Grill (Level 2, South Main Mall)

FB Page: https://www.facebook.com/JinJooKorean/

Are you an avid K-Drama or K-Pop fan (like me)? Have you ever wanted to channel your inner love for Korean Food by doing it just like how they do it in the dramas? Gladly, Jin Joo Korean Grill is in SM Mall of Asia!

Ready to channel your inner Kim Bok Joo? Here we go with their best-sellers!

8 Flavours (P1,560)

Personally, I love Samgyupsal! Imagine bacon being grilled until it’s crisp and wrapped around lettuce leaves to make a Ssam. Delish! To take it up a notch, Jin Joo took the crowd favorite and marinated them in 8 different flavors – such as garlic, curry, red wine, and many more! This is truly a MUST-TRY!

Steamed Egg – Gyeran Jjim (P130)

Have you ever wondered what it would be like not to chew your food at all? If you did, then try this! The minute I took a bit of this dish, it immediately melted within my taste buds while tingling me for more.

Beef Stew – Galbi Jjim (P390)

Beef short ribs are cooked slowly in a sweet and savory broth along with potato wedges, enoki mushrooms, and many more ingredients.

Grilled Baby Back Ribs with Cheese – Cheese Deung Galbi (P950)

Love cheese and barbecue? If you do, then this would definitely be up your alley. Grilled baby back ribs are dipped in a rich cheesy sauce ’til it becomes like pizza!

Army Base Stew – Budae Jjigae (P940)

Have the guts for spicy soup? Then, you’ll enjoy this. Ramyeon (ramen) noodles, Tteok (rice cake), tofu, enoki mushrooms, and an assortment of meats are simmered in a very addicting soup.

Words by Trisha Diaz de Rivera

Looking for the “best sisig in Manila”? You can ask people around the city, and here’s where many of them will point you to—Manam.

Manam is known for their own spin on the home-cooked Filipino dishes we all love. You will notice that each dish will have a uniqueness of its own that just makes every bite worthwhile. An establishment by The Moment Group back in the year 2013, Manam consistently receives high praises—whether from publications, their patrons, and new guests—for their mouthwatering dishes.

We tried out five of their best-selling dishes, and here’s what I, a first-timer to the restaurant, can say about them:

This is the original and traditional palabok, but mixed with their creamy and rich sauce made with shrimp stock, tofu, tinapa, and annatto and then topped with chicharon, crispy garlic, scallions, squid, and shrimp. Nostalgia in every bite.

Crispy Pancit Palabok

This is Manam’s twist on the typical palabok. It is served with crispy noodles at first, but once the sauce hits the dish, it becomes just like the glass noodles! The texture of the noodles are softer, soaking the sauce up really well. This is a dish packed with all Pinoy favorite flavors from the traditional palabo, but served with a delightful twist.

Watermelon Sinigang

Just from hearing the name of the dish, I knew this was going to be something special. In comparison to the traditional soup made with pork and tamarind, Manam’s version is made with short ribs and watermelon. Now, I would like to think that I am the ULTIMATE sinigang lover as I grew up eating this every single day, and still do every so often, so given my credentials, trust me when I say that this was a delicious take on the staple Filipino soup. It will be nothing like you’ve ever tasted before.

Ube + Sago

I am not much of an ube fan, but this was really delicious. With its creamy, refreshing, and perfectly sweet taste, I would say that this drink was a great complement to all the Filipino food I was served. Made with coconut milk, Manam’s ube sago drink is decadent but light at the same time.

House Crispy Sisig

And, last but not the least, the much-talked about Manam sisig. I am not much of a sisig lover but—this dish left me speechless. Personally, this is hands down the best sisig I have tried here in Manila, much like everyone’s claim. The crispy pork is cooked with their creamy sauce, topped with bits of chicharon, scallions, chili, and calamansi juice for that extra pop of flavor.

Overall, Manam surprises with the way they created a whole new spin on traditional Filipino cuisine. I can confidently say that I will be back to try the other varieties of dishes they offer.
